On this weeks' careers in construction meet Dexter, a BIM Coordinator. A BIM (Building Information Model) Coordinator, coordinates the process of generating and managing digital models of buildings. Building information models are virtual files that help with decision making during the building process. BIM Coordinators must be well educated not only in the industry they work but, in the architecture generally as well.

1. Why did you choose this career path?
I was given a book on Leonardo DaVinci who is considered to be a polymath at genius level & I thought myself to be a polymath, curious, an all rounder who was achieving fairly high results across multiple disciplines. I was 9 & made the decision to take the architecture route. I transitioned out of pure architecture, became a Package Manager, were an opportunity in a role that dealt with technology presented itself hence I became a BIM Coordinator.
2. What did you study in school/university?
My 1st degree is in Architecture & my 2nd degree is a Postgrad Diploma in Architectural Studies making up RIBA Part I & II.
3. What certifications are associated with your career?
You can be chartered with the Royal Institute Of British Architects as an Architect. BIM holds no formal accreditation.
4. What advice do you have for someone looking to pursue this career path?
Ignore the stereotypical path into the profession, many people have been steered away from architecture due to being misadvised they need Maths, Science & Art at A Levels.
