On this weeks’ careers in construction meet Rumbi, a Quantity Surveyor. A QS is a construction industry professional with expert knowledge on construction costs and contracts.

1. Why did you choose this career path?
After achieving my first degree, I worked in retail in planning roles. It didn’t quite work out, but I had friend who worked in the construction industry and we got the conversation going on different options for me in the industry. I picked QSing as it suited my skill set, it suited my love for numbers, analysis and being a problem solver.

2. What did you study in school/university?
I studied economics for my undergrad and then did a master’s degree in quantity surveying.

3. What certifications are associated with your career?
You can become RICS Chartered achieved by undertaking the APC (Assessment of Professional Competence).

4. What advice do you have for someone looking to pursue this career path?
The construction industry is a diverse and exciting market offering many different options. As a QS, you can choose to work in a variety of projects ranging from property on development projects such as offices, hotels, and apartments. Or you can get into transport and infrastructure working on high profile rail, aviation and road projects. You can choose to work in an office based position for a consultancy or roll up your sleeves on site with a contractor. What you get out of you career as a QS is entirely in your hands and up to you.
